The past few weeks have been challenging for all of us. Limiting contact, worrying about loved ones and figuring out how to pay the bills while our state battles COVID-19 can take its toll. That’s why I wanted to check in on you to make sure you have what you need to take care of yourself and your family.
Food Insecurity
We know that too many in our community don’t know where their next meal is coming from even in the best of times, and we must change that. But if you or someone you know is having trouble putting food on the table today there is help.
  • Albuquerque Public Schools are serving free grab-and-go meals for kids every weekday at schools in our community.
  • Seniors who need meals brought to their homes can call 1-800-432-2080 to schedule meal drop-off.
  • Food pantries, like Albuquerque’s Roadrunner Food Bank, are mobilizing to bring food to communities with food assistance in our area.
Financial Assistance
With businesses closing, many in our community have lost their jobs and lost their pay check. This is especially hard for minimum-wage workers who were already in need of a pay raise to give them a true living wage. Fortunately, there are programs to help everyone make ends meet through this crisis.
  • Unemployment benefits are available—even for gig workers and the self-employed.
  • PNM and other utilities are not cutting off service for non-payment during this time and they have resources to help you stay on top of your utility bills.
  • There are also options for people who are having trouble paying rent.
  • Small businesses are facing unprecedented economic disruption. Information on Small Business Administration and debt relief options is available.
Most importantly, there is access to health care that will make sure everyone can afford COVID-19 testing and treatment. (To me, this reinforces the need for universal health care all the time—not just in the middle of a pandemic.)
  • All COVID-19 testing and treatment in New Mexico will be paid for, regardless of anyone’s insurance coverage status, immigration or tribal status, everyone can get tested and treated.
  • Those facing homelessness in our community can also get tested and get care.
  • Testing is available—including drive-up testing—in our community.
I know these are scary times, but I’ve lived in this community my whole life. I’ve raised my kids here. I know that we will come together to support one another.
And my commitment to you hasn’t changed. It’s more important than ever that we have strong, community-focused leadership on the Bernalillo County Commission. My campaign continues to connect with voters. We need strong solid leadership in all levels of our government. As a mom, head of household, and Director, I can provide the experience needed now and into the future, when times are good or when the road gets rough. I’m rooted and ready!
Please take good care and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help finding additional services. I’ve always been here for you—and I’m certainly not going anywhere now!
Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay connected. Even at a distance, we can stand together!
